KOLKATA: The CBI today arrested the superintendent of service tax department of Central Excise, Saraj Kr Halder, from its Kasba office. A senior officer said, he was arrested while taking a bribe of Rs 25,000.

Power from garbage
KOLKATA: The Division Bench of Mr Justice Pinaki Ghosh and Mr Justice Asim Roy of Calcutta High Court today directed Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) and West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) to draw up a plan of producing power and fertilisers from the garbage of the Belgachia trenching ground. The direction was given following a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Mr Subhas Dutta of Howrah Ganatantrik Nagarik Samity. The HMC and the WBPCB can take help from Jadavpur University and Ramakrishna Mission.SNS
Hill tripartite talks
KOLKATA: The state government would put forward its views to the Centre on the proposed interim set-up for Darjeeling by 10 August, the urban development minister Mr Asok Bhattacharya said today. The next round of tripartite talks is slated to take place in Delhi on 17 August. SNS
No strike during work
KOLKATA: Mr Partha Chatterjee, Leader of the Opposition, today said that his party will not allow any strike in working place. He said this when a faction of the United State Government Employees’ Federation put up posters at Writers’ Buildings threatening to go on a pen-down strike on 16 August protesting against the state government’s anti-employee decision. Mr Chatterjee asked the secretary of the faction not to go in for the strike and to wear black badges and hold meetings during lunch breaks. SNS

KOLKATA : The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has written to the home secretary, Mr Samar Ghosh, asking for the removal of a mosque located on the north eastern side of the secondary runway of the NSC Bose Airport. Mr Ghosh meanwhile maintained that he will speak to the district magistrate regarding the matter. SNS
